Medical students in Wolisso

As agreed with the Managment Team of St.Luke Hospital and the Medical Director Dr. Fabio Manenti, students follow physicians in their duties, remaining under their supervision for any activities. Trainings last for periods of 3-4 weeks, involving 4 students attending the fifth or sixth year of the Medicine course.

Apprenticeships goal is to enable future physicians to see what Medicine is in a developing country. We firmly believe that this will deeply contribute to the cultural and professional growth of the involved students concerning topical questions as Global Health.

The “Safe Pregnancy” Project

St.Luke Hospital and S.I.S.M. Udine, in collaboration with the Public Health and Epidemiology department and Gynecology Clinic of the Udine University, “Centro Balducci ONLUS” association and “Medio Friuli” Health Service Agency, designed this project in order  to improve antenatal and neonatal preventional activities and obstetric services of St. Luke Hospital.

In fact in Wolisso context under-five mortality trend has increased in the last 10 years, reaching 161 deaths on 1000 newborns; 870 women on 100.000 die during abnormal deliveries; there is also a great increase of  number of deliveries per year (391 in 2001, 1078 in 2004); 43% of deliveries are complicated (cesarean sections, vacuum extraction, symphysiotomy...); delivery-related maternal mortality  is 1% and perinatal mortality is 11,7%.

Even the Millennium Development Goals Report identifies in perinatal mortality reduction and maternal health two key points for Ethiopia development, and the importance of modyfing such dramatic data is manifest.

The project goals are:

-        to support in-hospital preventional perinatal services;

-       to increase the connection between hospital and peripheral zones of the Wolisso  District;

-       to increase knowledge especially concerning mother and child health in Wolisso district and to increase monitoring of risky pregnancies;

-        to draw future physician’s attention to such topics as Global health;

-        to guarantee a correct management of the project.

The financing of these activities requires an “external” participation. That’s why S.I.S.M. Udine is taking part to the competition announced by Friuli Venezia Giulia Region for 2006 International Cooperation financing.

Information and awareness-increasing activities

Considering International Cooperation and Solidarity as one of the main fields of its interest, S.I.S.M. Udine takes part to every awareness-increasing activity concerning Wolisso Project topics, between students and beyond, through a collaboration network designed with School of Medicine and many other associations.

All the 29 italian offices of the Italian Secretariat of Medical Students are up-to-date upon the Project and can take part to it. Furthermore the Project was introduced during the “SISMoving 2005”, a series of meetings on international cooperation organised all over Italy by medical students, and the “A day for Africa”, a conference organised by “Medio Friuli” Health Service Agency.

Beginning from February, students will be able to experience a different aspect of International Medicine, attending to Immigrant Ambulatory, operated by ASS n° 4 and located in "Gervasutta" Hospital, in Udine.

Even this website, completely run by students, is developed with the goal to promote and spread information and awareness about Wolisso Project.
